VERIFY (verifythis.com / @verifythis) is a national cross-platform, fact-checking media organization run by a group of 20 journalists. Our mission is to combat misinformation spreading online, and answer reader questions about what’s true and what’s false. VERIFY is unique in the fact-checking industry by having a personal connection with our followers and encouraging conversation. We receive daily questions from subscribers and non-subscribers alike via direct message, email, and text, and our team responds with answers and links to content we’ve published. Listing credible sources is an important component of our stories; we list all of our sources before answering a question, publish our full interviews and only write stories that contain at least two primary sources to verify the answer. Our sources are thoroughly vetted experts and professionals who know the subject best, and/or original work, research, original documents, and firsthand accounts of an event or statement.
VERIFY thoughtfully designed our innovative Fast Facts newsletter that’s emailed every weekday morning. Rather than being text-heavy like many news-based newsletters, VERIFY Fast Facts was designed with user experience in mind. The visual presentation is mobile-forward and uses easy-to-scroll-through ‘cards’ that give subscribers quick access to daily facts on trending topics. For readers who are interested in learning more and have the time to dive deeper, links are provided throughout the email to VERIFY’s articles, social media posts, and videos.
Each ‘card’ covers a different topic, having its own section title and graphic icon. This design approach is visually organized, easy to follow and consistent. Readers can skim through top headlines and fast facts or find their favorite section in seconds. Rather than only using text-based links, we designed buttons for “story sources,” “read more,” and “true” and “false” conclusions. This graphical style showcases the VERIFY brand and gives the newsletter a friendly presentation more similar to a mobile app. Our high open rate demonstrates that the VERIFY newsletter’s design and functionality continue to stand out in subscriber inboxes.
